            Tansu
Japanese Presentation Chest with 3 interior drawers

             Origin: Japan
             Age: 19th Century
             Size: 10 1/2" width, 11 3/4" depth, 12" high

Materials: Transparent red laquer on wood.
Decorated with Mitsudomoe crest in gold
with ornate copper and iron hardware.

             Original key with functioning lock.

The Mitsutome crest is associated with the Shinto war              diety Hachiman and was often adopted as a traditional              symbol of the samurai. The three elements can also be              referenced as "man, earth and sky."

             Translated calligraphy "Doshu Fuwa"
             Two possible meanings:
             1) "Tosa Clan, Never Broken"

Tosa Clan had a strong presence in the late Edo Period
and was one of four clans responsible for the
             Meiji Restoration.
             2) Most likely it suggests a union between a family from the              Tosa Province of Kochi Prefecture on Shikoku Island and a              family from Fuwa, a district in Mino (Gifu) Prefecture.
Several interior kanji depict crane and tortoise (symbols of              longevity and good fortune), often present in wedding regalia.
