John Fick - Metal Sculpture
John has exhibited his sculptures professionally since 1972. After attending a liberal
arts college and earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kansas City Art Institute,
he ventured out to California. Finding employment in industrial and art foundries,
machine shops, structural welding shops and artists studios, he continued to enrich his
knowledge of metal working techniques. Later attending The University of California at
Berkeley, he studied Sculpture with Peter Voulkos and Brian Wall. After receiving a
Master of Fine Arts degree from U. C. Berkeley he received “An Individual Artist
Fellowship” from the National Endowment for the Arts. John uses foundry and metal
smithing techniques in the production of his sculptures. By working the metal hot his
iron sculptures gained an almost clay like quality. John has been an active member of
the California Blacksmiths Association and the Artist Blacksmiths Association of North
America for the last 15 years. During that time he has served as a board member, vice
president and president of the California Blacksmiths Association. For the past 35
years, John has been self-employed producing sculptures and custom architectural
metalwork on a commission basis.
